During
the May 16 - October 15 season, ferry service, across the Bay of Fundy
from Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia, Canada, is provided by Bay Ferries Limited. In addition,
trips from Portland, Maine will be added beginning in the new 2006
season.
“The Cat,” as it is called, has revolutionized ferry service
in North America by providing speeds of up to 55 miles per hour (90km/h).
Its unique catamaran design allows the hulls to actually “pierce” the
waves rather than ride on top of them. A traditional ferry would take
about 6 hours to travel the distance from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova
Scotia. Whereas “The Cat” ferry makes the same trip in
only 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Most all of the amenities one would expect of a cruise ship are available
during your voyage. The Cafe is open to serve meals all day. There
is a bar and a duty free gift shop where you may purchase any of a
wide selection of duty free items at amazing bargains. For those wanting
to try their hand at gambling, there are over 71 slot machines. To
entertain the children, a movie is shown on large screen TV's in the
lounge during each crossing.
Reservations are recommended. For those wanting to explore Nova Scotia,
one and two night packages are available. Contact your travel agent
for additional information. You may also make reservations at 1-888-249-7245
or online at The Cat's web site. Be sure to mention that you found
the Bar Harbor Ferry or “The Cat” through AcadiaMagic.com.
