Hulls Cove in Bar Harbor, Maine

Hulls Cove, Bar Harbor, Maine

Hulls Cove, which is actually part of the Mount Desert Island town of Bar Harbor, Maine, is a very pleasant cove providing an easterly view of the ocean along Route 3. You cannot miss it. Once you reach Mount Desert Island, start driving East on Route 3 toward the business district of Bar Harbor for about 3 miles. The road wil lthen take a turn to the right and start down a small hill. Shortly after this the landscape on the left opens up to reveal a wide clear view of the ocean. This is the Bar Harbor Village of Hulls Cove. There are several places to stay and a fine restaurant right next to the water on the left at the end of the cove.

Watch for Park Entrance

You may want to begin your exploration of Acadia National Park at the nearby Hulls Cove Visitor Center just off Maine Route 3. The entrance is a short distance on the right after the Hulls Cove inlet and the Chart Room Restaurant. Watch for this on the right. The famous Carriage Roads may be accessed from this location as well. For those wishing to leave the driving to someone else, the free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus makes regular stops at the main parking lot and services many places on Mount Desert Island as well as a few on the mainland.

The Hulls Cove Visitor Center is open seasonally at different hours and closed November 1 through mid-April. For information during the winter months, visit the Park Headquarters on Highway 233 immediately after Eagle Lake, 3 miles west of Bar Harbor.

A Choice to Make

Greg A. Hartford, photographer, author, publisherIf you want to jump right into the Acadia National Park experience rather than continue into Bar Harbor, a good way to do this is via the park entrance immediately after the Hulls Cove inlet next to Route 3. Just as you pass the inlet and turn left as you go up a slight hill, be sure you stay on the right side so that you can take a right. If you want to start on the Park Loop Road, take a left at the first stop sign. This will take you to the point where you can take another left onto the one-way section of the Park Loop Road, or continue straight a short distance to the start of the cadillac Mountain Summit Road on the left.
