Gotham Mountain Trail with Memoriam Plaque honoring Waldron Bates

Gorham Mountain Trail - Waldron Bates

Anyone that takes advantage of the wonderful hiking trails in Acadia National Park should pause and consider how much work went into creating the stone steps and iron rung ladders in the trails to aid in the traversing of the cliffs, talus slopes (the sloped mass of rocks at the base of a cliff), and other steep areas. The man to thank for this is Waldron Bates and a Memoriam Plaque dedicated to him is seen here. It reads:

“1856 - 1909, Waldron Bates in Memoriam MCMX, Pathmaker”
