This panoramic photo of an Acadia sunrise was taken from Thompson Island Picnic Area just before the sun broke across the horizon. Thompson Island, located in Trenton, Maine, is the small island between the mainland of Maine and Mount Desert Island and is where most people first enter Acadia National Park. This is a popular location to eat Maine Lobster and steamed clams purchased in Trenton before continuuing onto the much larger Mount Desert Island. Generations of people visiting the area have started their days here.

Mount Desert Island has 17 mountains, all of which were sheared off by glaciers thousands of years ago. Cadillac Mountain, at 1,532 feet, is the highest and best known mountain on the island. This region is known for its rugged rocky coastline (see photo).
