Acadia National Park boasts several prime locations along the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, situated right next to the Park Loop Road. Notable sites include the Precipice, The Beehive, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliff. At Otter Cliff, the road and island curve to the right at Otter Point and continue along the shoreline of Otter Cove. A few parking spots are available along the road in this area. Interestingly, this cove is where the French explorer Samuel de Champlain was forced to spend the winter after damaging the hull of his ship on September 5, 1604, while approaching Otter Cliff. It is believed that he may have struck what is known as the Spindle, a submerged rock that becomes visible at low tide.
