Turtle Island in Winter Harbor, Maine
Turtle Island is located south of Grindstone Neck and west of Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Harbor, Maine, in Hancock County. The island is mostly covered with a 150 year old spruce/fir forest and supports a seasonal settlement of great blue herons. Interior sections are closed during nesting season. The National Park Service holds an easement to all 100 acres of Turtle Island in order to permanently protect its natural state and scenic value to the public. The island is managed by the Nature Conservancy and closed during nesting season. Plants and vegetation of note are rapsberries, blackberries, cherries and gray birch.
