Mount Katahdin Panoramic Images
Mount Katahdin from Abol Bridge
This image of Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine was captured from the Abol Bridge on the Golden Road. It was taken on March 25. We seldom know how a photo shoot will turn out, especially in Maine where the expression is, "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute!" There may be clouds or thick fog blocking the sun. Then, suddenly, there is a break and beams of light shoot across the landscape bathing things in a golden light. This was such a morning. It created a beautiful color contrast against the cool early morning blues. Image M1A7737 Specs: Sunrise on March 25, Canon EOS R5, Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Lens at f/11, 1/8 second, ISO 100.
Mount Katahdin at Compass Pond
This was a gorgeous view of Mount Katahdin taken on an early June morning while at Compass Pond next to the Golden Road in Northern Maine. The rich green shines against the blues. The shore of the pond is only about thirty feet from the road through a stand of trees that only partially block the view. Image M1A0282 Specs: June 6, Canon EOS R5, Canon 24-105mm f/4.0 L Lens at f/9, 1/80 second, ISO 160.
Mount Katahdin at Compass Pond
This shows Mount Katahdin as viewed from Compass Pond next to the Golden Road in northern Maine. Autumn is a great time of year for photography in this region of Maine. Keep in mind that the colors begin changing and reach their peak earlier here than areas further south. Many people come to know Mount Katahdin because it is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. Image 9523 Specs: October 6 at about 7:05 AM, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24-105mm f/4 L at 50mm, 1/10 second, f/11, ISO 125, 5 images.

Mount Katahdin in Early October
This was late in the afternoon so there is strong side lighting from the left or western side of the mountain. The shooting location is at Compass Pond which is on the northern side of the Golden Road. Katahdin Mountain is in Baxter State Park. The nearest town is Millinocket to the east. Mount Katahdin in August
The sun, out of view to the left, was just about to set which added a real golden glow to certain areas of this photo of Mount Katahdin such as on the trees in the middle area. They almost appear to have changed to their fall colors but it is actually from the color of the setting sun. This view is from Abol Bridge on the Golden Road. Image 8953 Specs: August 18 at about 7:29 PM, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24-105mm f/4 L Series at 24mm, 1/8 sec, f/10, ISO 160, Single Image.

Heavy Fog at Mount Katahdin
Mount Katahdin and surrounding areas were enshrouded in a very heavy fog this October morning. I took a few pictures but then, after about an hour, decided to drive to Upper Togue Pond in Baxter State Park. This view is from Abol Bridge. You can just about see the top of the mountain where some low clouds are moving over the summit and catching some of the early light. Image A2558 Specs: October 7 at about 7:17 AM, Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 24-105mm f/4 L Series at 28mm, 1/13 sec, f/16, ISO 100, One single image cropped.
Low Clouds Cover Mount Katahdin
This is one of my first photos, especially first panoramic image, I took and created from Abol Bridge of Mount Katahdin. After driving a couple of hours during the night to be here early, I discovered some very heavy cloud cover. Since I shot from the walking section of Abol Bridge, and it is very sensitive to any movement, I was not sure that it would come out OK. Here is the successful result so the shooting test worked which opened the door to create the image for the hospital mural. Image 8676 Specs: August 14 at about 7:47 PM, Canon 5D Mark II, Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 at 19mm, 1/2 sec, f/8, ISO 200, Combined 3 different images.
Autumn in Bloom with Mist
Shortly before reaching Mount Katahdin and the entrance to Baxter State Park during the autumn season, I saw this scene so pulled over to try and capture it. The sunlight had not yet shown above the nearby hills to burn off the morning mist yet. This was one of those very still and enchanting moments that happens often in nature and why we get up so early to try and capture it to share with others. Image A2869 Specs: October 11 at about 6:48 AM, Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L Series at 150mm, 1.3 sec, f/29, ISO 100, Combined 3 different images for increased tonal range then cropped.
Take a Ride or Hike to the North Side
If you have ever wanted to explore other parts of Maine other than the coastal areas during your visit, consider venturing further north to areas such as the Moosehead Lake Region with its main town of Greenville or even Baxter State Park, home of Mount Katahdin. The main town near here is Millinocket and East Millinocket, easily accessed via Interstate 95. This part of the state has even more rugged beauty of the wilderness kind. The series of panoramic images on this page should peak your interest a bit. Maine has very large sections of undeveloped forest land with lots of wildlife. Have a look and be sure to share the experience with family and friends via social media.
