Winter Harbor has made a nice comeback after the huge population and business hit it took in 2002 when the local naval base closed. Its population dropped dramatically by as much as 48%. In those times, there were many great deals on local homes and real estate to be found. This decrease in economic activity was misleading as it was a very attractive coastal community with lots of diversity. Soon, many more people heard of this prime Acadia National Park location on Schoodic Peninsula.
