Somes Sound seen from Manset in Southwest Harbor, ME

This panoramic image shows the southern entrance to Somes Sound as seen from a section of Southwest Harbor, Maine called Manset. Southwest Harbor is one of the towns on Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park. Manset is a well-known boat building community with spectacular views like this. Somes Sound is categorized as a fjard rather than a fjord.

Somes Sound runs north-south in the middle of Mount Desert Island. This section is at the southern end where it opens into the open ocean (to the right). At the north end is the small and picturesque village of Somesville, the first settlement on the island. The whole panoramic image was created from six different photos. On smaller viewing devices you will see cropped versions. Images were captured on July 27 at about 7:36 AM, Canon 5D, 24-105mm f/4 L at 105mm, 1/30 second, f/22, ISO 200, 6 images

A Pleasant Calm from the Quiet Side

Greg A. Hartford, photographer, author, publisherThis is easily one of the most beautiful spots on Mount Desert Island. I am often asked about where there are some inns or vacation rentals close to the ocean with gorgeous views but that are less crowded and less busy than the more popular Bar Harbor provides. This oceanside location in Manset instantly comes to mind. The town of Southwest Harbor and its Manset community still has a unique coastal appeal that has evolved and been nurtured through many generations of boat builders and fishermen. Take some time during your visit to check it out. You will be glad that you did.
