Southwest Harbor, Maine Panoramic Photo

Southwest Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine

This panoramic photo shows Southwest Harbor, Maine during late afternoon on a warm July day. The view is from Route 102 which runs right beside the ocean. The town is a famous yacht building community and desirable vacation destination on Mount Desert Island, home to much of Acadia National Park.

A well known boat building section of Southwest Harbor is Manset. The access point to Manset is very close to this location a short distance to the right. From that vantage point, you can see the Bear Island Lighthouse to the east or look north into Somes Sound. The time of year is July 12 at about 7:04 PM. Image is the result of merging nine vertical images together to create the panoramic. Specs: Canon 5D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L Series at 200mm, 1/13 sec, f/16, ISO 100. (images 2300-2308)

A Hub of Activity on the Quiet Side

Greg A. Hartford, photographer, author, publisherFrom the shore-side Route 102 location as shown above, several mountains can be seen as well as a wide variety of yachts, sailboats, lobster boats, and simple dinghies. Many things have evolved from over a century ago when steamships would travel to the wharves in Southwest Harbor from points southwest such as Boston. But there is still a timeless quality felt here that have roots in many generations of sailors and boat-builders. It is this that call upon many to return here each year to experience and enjoy the lifestyle, the fresh ocean air, and the wonderful views, not to mention, the pace of living.
